July 2014

'Income tax returns are the most imaginative fiction being written today,' said Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Herman Wouk. Being editors, not novelists, we advise you to remain firmly in the land of non-creative non-fiction when it comes to your looming tax return. This month we have interviewed a tax accountant who works regularly with writers and editors and asked him your most pressing questions.

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of Editors Victoria will be held on Thursday 14 August at CQ Functions, 113 Queen Street, Melbourne, from 6:30 pm. As usual, this meeting will be free for financial members, but you must register if you wish to attend.

Tax Time

Tony Nagle likens the relationship you should have with your accountant to the one you have with your family doctor. 'They should know where you are heading and what you want to do.' The only thing is, to me he looks a bit more like a house painter who has scrubbed up for our interview than he does a doctor. Or even an accountant.

Dark Fantasy: Dinner Meeting Report

Young Adult (YA) fiction came under the spotlight at Dark Fantasy: Symposium on the future of young adult fiction, an event held by Editors Victoria at CQ Functions in Melbourne on Thursday 12 June 2014.

The discussion examined what drives YA fiction and whether or not writers, editors and publishers give YA readers what they want and/or need. We also looked at how some YA books cross the barrier between 'YA' and 'adult' literature.

EWF Emerging Editors

The 2014 Emerging Writers' Festival was the first in its decade-long history to feature the work of editors. The decision to schedule a full day on 30 May 'for editing word-nerds and writers' to hear top-quality editors was clearly welcomed by the many who attended. The venue was the Wheeler Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas in Melbourne - the natural home of editors.

Out to Lunch

A freelancers' lunch was held on Thursday 5 June. Seventeen freelancers were in attendance and discussed their work and interests in the convivial atmosphere of the Fitz Cafe in Fitzroy.

Government Writers and Editors Wanted

One of our members is looking for editors with experience in writing and editing for government. Annual report experience would also be highly regarded.

Micro Mentor

Dear MM,

I'm so busy editing for my clients that I never have time to put in an invoice. How do you manage it?

Dear Ed

dearedDear Headword

I think I am a binge editor. I procrastinate until days before a job is due, then work 16-hour days to hit the deadline, often starting at 5:00 in the morning. People look at me strangely when I go up the street wearing my overcoat on top of my pyjamas (even if they are my best pyjamas, freshly ironed and masquerading as a tracksuit). It's affecting my health. What can I do?
