The October Editors Victoria meeting themed ‘What publishers want’ was a huge success with a full house of 59 members attending the event held at CQ Functions in Queen Street, Melbourne.

A great session from the panellists made for good interaction and participation and a lot of happy and satisfied editors, who provided very good feedback at the end of the night.

In addition, as October was the 10th anniversary of the national editors' accreditation exam, four editors who passed this year's exam were presented with their certificates. The rest all elected to have theirs sent by mail.

The five specialist panellists covered topics all editors wanted to know on things like style sheets, budgets, indemnity insurance, what these employers looked for in applications, and the advantages of accredited freelance editors to in-house staff.

Speaking on their business requirements, the panellists gave our members a valuable insight into what their businesses look for in editing services.

The panellists and their areas of expertise were:

  • Mizti Zagon, Head of Production Services at Pearson Australia, on primary education
  • Nadine Anderson-Conklin, Editorial Manager for Macmillan Education Australia, on secondary education
  • Geraldine Corridon, Senior Publisher (Higher Education) for Oxford University Press, on higher education
  • Mandy Brett, Senior Editor at Text Publishing, on trade fiction and narrative non-fiction
  • Imogen Bannister, Publishing Planning Manager at Lonely Planet, on travel guides.
