Membership Report

Editors Victoria welcomed 129 new members over the past year. This brings our total membership base at the end of June 2012 to 573 (not including our 18 honorary life members). The number of new members is significantly higher than in the previous year and brings our total member numbers back to what they were in 2010.

Earlier this year we implemented a new membership database management system as part of our rebranding process. We hope that our members have found the new website easy to use. To date, over 70% of members have renewed their membership for the 2012-13 financial year.

In the member survey undertaken earlier this year, one of the reasons given for members not applying for full membership was the difficulty in obtaining references. In response to this feedback, we have developed a referee survey, which can be filled out by referees and returned to us in lieu of a written reference. The information required is still the same, but by asking a series of questions, we can save the referee from having to draft a reference from scratch. We want to encourage our members to take on the benefits of full membership, and this will hopefully go some small way to making this easier. The new form will be available via the website shortly.

A number of constitutional changes were passed at this year's AGM. Two of these changes have a particular impact on membership. The first is the introduction of a new level of membership. We have implemented a student membership in an effort to support up-and-coming editors. Students undertaking a full-time course in a related field of study will be eligible to apply at this new level, which will be offered at an annual rate of $50. We hope this will help to grow our member numbers and encourage emerging editors to get involved in the industry and meet their peers.

The second change is that we will be moving to a new membership renewal system in which membership fees will now be due one calendar year after payment is received, instead of on 1 July each year. We feel this will be fairer on new members who join in the early months of the year; the functionality for this process is now supported by our new membership system. Don't worry, members will still receive several email reminders when their membership is due for renewal, and most current members' subscriptions will continue to be due on 1 July (assuming you have paid on time!).

The delivery of member services remains a core goal of Editors Victoria. We welcome your involvement in achieving our goals and thank you for your ongoing support.

I joined the committee in January this year, taking over the reins from Karyn Noble. It has been a rewarding experience serving on the committee these past seven months and I'd like to extend my thanks to the other hardworking members of the committee for their support and encouragement.

I am pleased to report that we welcomed 129 new members over the past year. This brings our total membership base at the end of June 2012 to 573 (not including our 18 honorary life members). The number of new members is significantly higher than in the previous year and brings our total member numbers back to what they were in 2010. We have also had a rush of new members over the last month and I hope to see numbers continue to grow this year.
